Getting Connected With Your New Home

Hey ,

How are you doing with your new year's resolutions?  Still sticking with them?  Great!Well, we have another goal to add to your list: Create Your Support System"Support system?" You ask. "But I have so much else to do!"Don't roll your eyes just yet.  PCSing can be an overwhelming time.  Yes, you have to plan, pack, and organize. And no matter how early you get started or how much you try to prepare there never seems to be enough time.  But once the dust settles and you're in your new home, the struggle isn't over.  Now you need to get connected with your area and the people around you.  This is a daunting task whether it's your first move or fifth. Over here at MHN, we are no strangers to PCSing.  We have some tips and advice for making your next PCS smoother and for transitioning into your new home.  Let us know if we can help by connecting you with one of our certified MilHousing Network agents!

Creating Your Support System

Packing up your home isn't the only part of PCSing (though it's arguably the most time consuming).  You also have to pack up your whole life, leaving behind friends, maybe family, favorite restaurants, and the comforts you have grown to know.

But this can be a great opportunity! You get to:

  • See new places

  • Experience other cultures

  • Meet new people

It's easy to feel alone, isolated, and scared in a new location, especially if you work from home, stay home with the kids, are a little shy, or just haven't had a chance to think about meeting people in the craze of moving. But don't worry. There are spouse groups in place at almost every base and they are great places to start.  Here are a few of our favorite unofficial military spouse groups on Facebook! We even took the guess work out of what to say when you join a Facebook group! Here's a few of our fav intros!

Don't Make These Mistakes When Organizing Your Living Room

When moving into your knew home some times things feel a bit "off."  Maybe your new space is an awkward shape. Maybe your living area is much smaller (or bigger!).

But, because living rooms are one of the most used places in your home, you definitely need a good, comfortable layout to help make you feel at home.  Keep these tips in mind while moving into your home!

1. Keep Entryways Clear-

Make sure there is plenty of clearance when first walking into your room.  Having an awkward, cramped entry will make the entire room feel off.

2. Let Furniture Float-

You don't need to push all of your furniture up against walls.  This will help give a cozier feel to the room.

3. Use rugs effectively-

If you have an area rug, situate seating so that the legs are either completely on or off of it.  This will keep people from tripping over rugs or having an uneven feel in the room.
