The hidden costs of selling your home

,

As a military family, searching for houses online or in person, hoping to find the one that will call out to you as your next home, can feel nerve-wracking. Just because your move might only be temporary doesn't mean you can't create a place that feels like home. Check out this blog post for five ways to make your new house feel like your home once you find a place you love.

What does it mean to be a good neighbor? How do you know if you are a good neighbor? Heather Campbell breaks down a few actionable steps for how to passively be a good neighbor, and how to actively be a good neighbor. Listen in to learn how you can be a good neighbor, even when you're not in control of where you will call home next.

Who says you have to wait until Spring to get organized and clean up around your house? Now that the temps are cooling off, this is a great time to get your garage organized so you can be aware of what you have in case you need to relocate. Here are a few tips to help get you started:

  1. Start planning – Organizing your space feels like a lot of work, but if you start with a plan, you’ll accomplish more.

  2. Get rid of the unnecessary – It’s time to weed out the unused and unnecessary things that have just been piling up. Make two or three piles. One for trash, one for recycling (if that’s an option), and one for donations.

  3. What do you need for storage – Now that you only have the things you need, it’s time to get down to organizing. This is where having some shelves and storage totes really come in handy.

  4. Maximize the space you have – Whether your garage is large or small, you can take advantage of your space by hanging things vertically on the walls. This helps you stay organized and keeps things out of the way.

  5. Off-base storage – If you don’t have a garage or just don’t have the space to keep things you’ve had in the garage, consider off-base or outside storage options.

Ready to sell your home? Maybe you are PCS-ing to a new Duty Station or you’ve outgrown the space, whatever the reason, it’s important to make sure you’re 110% ready for all of the costs associated with selling. Even the somewhat hidden ones.

  • Agent commissionsusually account for 5-6% of the selling price.

  • Don't forget to budget for anything that might need to be fixed or spruced up.

  • To prepare for a great photo shoot of your home and the showings it will bring, you might want to invest in staging your space.

  • You’ll want to invest in a deep cleaning, carpet cleaning (if you have them), and updated landscaping.

  • Don't forget about the fees you might be responsible for once you're under contract, such as home buying warranties, pre inspections, and survey costs (to name a few).
